“Big Love”: Bigger Message

I’m sure it won’t be long until someone posts the “Big Love” depiction of LDS temple ceremonies on YouTube. It was an outstanding episode last night, with the the few snippets (less than 5 minutes of a normally two-hour ritual) that actually treated the whole concept with dignity and respect (unless you count showing it, against it).

I was somewhat amazed that the overall look and feel was captured in those five minutes and that so many references were used (e.g. the prayer circle (“oh god, hear the words of my mouth”), one of the handshakes, some of the ritual at the veil — including the full name of the second token of the Melchizedek Priesthood and the ultimate entrance into the celestial room).

Still wondering about the blue fig leaf aprons. Perhaps a way for producers to subtlety introduce a flaw into the whole — like the Navajo do in weaving their blankets — a symbol that only god creates perfection.
